Podsumowanie AMM 2023 | Additive Manufacturing Meeting

The 4th edition of the Additive Manufacturing Meeting (AMM) – the International Conference of AM Users’ was held on June 20-21, 2023, in Wroclaw, Poland.

The 4th edition of AMM was held within the “lunch-to-lunch” conception. Participants had an opportunity to listen to 17 talks from experts from industry and R&D organizations. As usual, the AMM conference played the role of experience and networking platform between industry and science. Therefore, this year proportion of representatives of industry vs. science was 53 vs. 47%. Such participant diversity leads to fruitful conversations and exchange of AM experience between research, industry and AM companies.

Participants noted that this year’s conference program was quite balanced. There were plenty of talks considering different aspects of polymer and metal AM applications.

The AMM’2023 conference started with the session Metal AM. The head of the Department of Laser Technologies, Automation and Production Organization Mechanical Faculty Wroclaw University of Science and Technology – Tomasz Kurzynowski, D.Sc., in his talk “Research Activities of CAMT-FPC to Accelerate AM Implementation”, showed the newest case studies and research possibilities at the CAMT Center. Małgorzata Maciąg from Collins Aerospace Wroclaw, during her talk “Development of a Methodology for the Production of Aircraft Parts in 3D Printing Technology”, introduced participants to the challenges in processing aluminium alloys for aerospace both from the technology and from the material properties side. Ralf Frohwerk from SLM Solutions, in his talk “Changing the Way the World Manufactures – Metal AM in Automotive”, showed interesting cases from the automotive industry and paid attention of the participants to the fact that additive technologies do not compete with conventional technologies and what aspects should be taken into account when calculating the cost of producing one part. At the end of the session, Bartosz Morońszyk from AMAZEMET, in the talk titled “Ultrasonic Atomization and Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Glass Forming Alloys”, presented possibilities of acquiring specific alloys in powder form using ultrasonic atomization.

After lunch, participants had an opportunity to learn more about powder bed fusion of polymers during the session Polymer AM. The session focused on the technological process and the connection between process and material properties. First, the powder quality, similar to metal AM, greatly influences the end product. Therefore, during the talk “Closed Material Loop for Lasersintering” held by Dr Soeren Griessbach from Fraunhofer IWU / GS Pro GmbH, the possibilities to regenerate the polymer powder were presented. The other powder-connected talk was presented by Dominik Zdybał from Alpha Powder – “Study of the Influence of Sphericity and Internal Porosity of Thermoplastic Polymer Particles on the Flowability and Packing Density of the Powder Bed”. Dominik showed the possibility of changing the morphology of polymer powder particles. Dr Daniela Schob from the Brandenburg University of Technology, in her talk “Characterization and Modelling of Material and Damage Behaviour of Selective Laser Sintered Polyamide 12, considering Thermomechanical Approaches”, presented the possibility to analyze and predict mechanical properties of PA12 parts with the use of mathematical models. And last but not least was a presentation delivered by Aleksander Kubeczek from WrUST titled “Dual Beam Laser Sintering of Polymers (DBLS)” about an innovative solution designed at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology considering the use of the dual beam as a tool for laser processing of polymers during the laser sintering process of polymers.

At the end of the first day, participants visited labs at the Centre of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (CAMT).

The second day began with the “Industrial Cases in AM” session, where Prof. Rafal Walczak from WrUST presented possibilities of microprinting for electronics and labs-on-chip within his talk “3D Printing of Microsystems”. Dr Filip Granek, CEO of XTPL, showed an innovative solution created by XTPL during his presentation “Ultra-Precise Deposition: Additive Manufacturing Process for Next-Generation Microelectronics”. Adam Wojciechowski from Demant Operations Poland shared with the participants the challenges and opportunities that exist when implementing additive technologies for the mass production of hearing instruments within a talk titled “Innovative Custom Hearing Instrument Production with the New Generation of the Most Technologically Advanced 3D Printers in DLP technology. Case Study from Demant Operations Poland”. Dr Bogdan Dovgyy, CEO of IAMG, in the talk “Tuning the strengthening mechanisms of LPBF processed IN718 for end-use applications”, introduced the audience to the possibility of controlling mechanical properties in additively produced superalloys based on nickel. In this case, the reference point was the possibility of using parts made of the selected superalloy in the aerospace industry. The session was closed with a talk held by Dr Joanna Helman (INNOMANU-WrUST) entitled “Supporting Advanced Manufacturing Ecosystem by Sharing Economy and Open Innovation Tools”. Dr Helman presented the possibilities of supporting entrepreneurs and innovators by providing access to research infrastructure in Poland and partner countries. The tool supporting these activities can be found on the Synergy Profiling Tool website (https://synpro.e-science.pl/).

The last session of AMM’2023 was “AM in Medical Applications”, where, again, the talks could be divided into metal and non-metal applications. Marta Kozakiewicz-Latała from the Medical University of Wrocław, in her presentation “Application of Non-Commercial Polymeric Filaments with Incorporated API for FDM Processing – 3D Printed Composite Scaffolds to Support Bone Regeneration”, addressed how miscibility and local interactions in drug/polymer/plasticizer blends affect the properties of the produced filaments and how non-commercial filaments are used in biomedical applications. Dr Ewelina Baran from the Pedagogical University of Kraków, in turn, focused on pharmaceutical dosage forms manufactured by vat photopolymerization during the talk “Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms by VAT Photopolymerization – from Additive Manufacturing to Functional Properties and Formulation Understanding”. She also presented the results of the drug release test (functional characteristics) presented alongside the data obtained from in situ NMR/MRI experiments (spatiotemporal, physicochemical characteristics). Dr. Lukas Stepien from Fraunhofer IWS and ATeM, in his talk “Additive Manufacturing for Orthodontics”, showed possibilities to use PBF-LB and Binder Jetting technology for producing denture parts. The closing talk at the conference was an online talk delivered by Dr Yaroslav Holovenko, CEO of 3D METAL TECH titled “3D-printed Patient-Specific Implants for War-Victims” about using additive manufacturing for planning operations and producing patient-customised implants for war victims within the civil population and professional army in Ukraine.
